Consultants for Injury Prevention, Evaluation and Rehabilitation
About C.I.P.E.R.
C.I.P.E.R. was established in 1992 as an offshoot of Blaser’s Physiotherapy Clinic. It is a specialty clinic designed to meet the needs of individuals who have chronic pain or multiple injuries, often as a result of motor vehicle or workplace accidents.
Conditions treated at C.I.P.E.R. tend to be more complex and require considerably more time per session to treat than is available for treatment at Blaser’s Physiotherapy Clinic. Many insurance and workplace agreements, however, provide sufficient funding so that the needed specialty care is available at C.I.P.E.R.
In motor vehicle or workplace accidents, people often suffer severe sudden trauma to one or more of the four systems of the body that make movement possible the skeletal, the connective tissue, the neurological and the cardio-respiratory. Damage to one system can lead to problems in the others and often results in chronic pain, weakness or limited movement. It may also exacerbate pre-existing conditions. C.I.P.E.R. can help by providing the care time per session that is needed to treat such complex conditions.
Our goals
At C.I.P.E.R., our first concern is to resolve pain, stabilize injuries or conditions and keep them from getting worse. Once this is achieved, we focus on restoring strength, movement and function as much as possible. Our ultimate goal is to enable our patients to manage their own physical well-being independently. While it may not be possible to resolve complex or multiple injuries completely, treatment at C.I.P.E.R. will significantly improve the quality of life for most individuals recovering from accidents and those who otherwise suffer from chronic pain.
The assessment and treatment process
People who benefit most from treatment at C.I.P.E.R. have complex single or multiple injuries that affect more than one system of the body. The complexity of these problems stems not only from the multiple nature of these injuries but from the way in which one injury or condition often exacerbates others and the slowness with which such injuries heal.
The assessment and treatment process is one of untangling the symptoms of multiple conditions. It involves:
- doing a comprehensive assessment of the problem, including a history and a physical examination
- designing and implementing a treatment plan which meets each patient’s needs and takes lifestyle and treatment goals into account
- modifying this plan regularly in response to patient input and our reassessments of progress
- educating the patient about his or her condition or injury and suggesting strategies for maintaining well-being once treatment ends
We use a variety of integrated assessment and treatment strategies that are based on the work of physiotherapists around the world. One of these is Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) an innovative treatment for chronic pain caused by irritation of nerves (neuropathic pain) that draws on both the traditional practice of acupuncture and recent advances in neurological medicine. Other strategies include Cyriax diagnosis and techniques, McKenzie spinal care and Medical Exercise Therapy.
The actual physical therapies used might include:
- manual therapy to mobilize stiff joints, muscles and other connective tissues
- electrotherapy (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation/TENS, electrical muscle stimulation, short-wave diathermy and ultrasound) to control pain and inflammation
- traction (cervical and lumbar) to alleviate neck and low back pain and to loosen stiff joints
- anatomical acupuncture to control pain and inflammation
- Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) to alleviate chronic neuropathic pain
An individualized programme of exercise may supplement the physiotherapy treatments. Exercises might include:
- treadmill work to increase aerobic capacity
- weight training to build up the strength and endurance of muscles and connective tissues, and to increase mobility and range of motion
- stretching to increase flexibility, mobility and range of motion
- patients may use C.I.P.E.R.’s treadmill, multi-station weight machine, wall pulleys and free weights. A member of C.I.P.E.R.’s staff is also available for personal training at an off-site exercise facility of the patient’s choice.
C.I.P.E.R. combines new approaches to the treatment of chronic pain with traditional physiotherapy techniques and individualized exercise programs.
